May 5, 2008 :: No. 249

Cal State Fullerton has moved up to first in California and fifth in the nation for the number of bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanic students, as reported in Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education's "Top 100."

The annual rankings, published in the magazine's May 5 issue, are based on 2007 data from the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics. The previous year's statistics placed CSUF second in the state and sixth in the nation.

Cal State Fullerton's Class of 2007 included 1,504 Hispanics who earned bachelor's degrees and 206 who earned master's degrees. The magazine ranks Cal State Fullerton 25th in the nation for the number of master's degrees awarded to Hispanics.

The magazine also tracks institutions by degrees awarded in specific academic programs and by enrollment. With almost 9,600 Hispanic students enrolled, Cal State Fullerton is first in California and eighth in the nation.

For bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics in specific majors, Cal State Fullerton ranks:

  • first in communications

  • second in public administration

  • seventh in education and protective services

  • eighth in business and marketing, plus area studies

  • ninth in psychology and visual and performing arts

  • 10th in mathematics

Overall, Hispanics constitute 28 percent of Cal State Fullerton's student population of more than 36,000. Since 2004, Cal State Fullerton has been designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a Hispanic-Serving Institution.
